Production Diary: Nature’s Narrator I captured this image a few years ago during one of those rare, surreal moments where everything aligned: sculptural mountains, layered textures, valleys draped in lush moss, and even clusters of pink flowers blooming against the odds. In the middle of that vastness, a lone figure in red stood still, quietly admiring the scene. I instinctively took the shot and later stitched several frames into a panoramic composition. But for a long time, I didn’t know how to present it. The image felt visually rich, yet emotionally scattered. In fact, I almost removed the figure because I thought the scene might speak better on its own. Then something clicked. I realized it wasn’t about showing everything. It was about telling something. So I stripped it down. I sacrificed details I once found beautiful, such as the mossy textures and the pink flowers. I reduced the palette to its essence, keeping just yellow, green, and red. If you set aside light and shadow, those are the only real colors that remain. That decision became the story. This image isn’t just about the grandeur of nature. Nor is it about the solitary human presence. It’s about the tension between them, capturing the moment nature speaks and we choose how to listen. That’s why I titled it “Nature’s Narrator.” Because in the end, the narrator isn’t the landscape. It’s not the figure. It’s you, the viewer, interpreting silence, scale, and light through your own way of seeing.

This image came from a day I needed distance: from disappointment, and from feeling unseen. I had recently been overlooked at work despite putting in real effort. It wasn’t a dramatic event, just the quiet sting of being passed over again because of office politics. I took a sick day, my first one in five years. I didn’t go far, heading just to a nearby garden with my camera and hoping stillness would offer something I couldn’t name yet. That’s when I saw the magnolia. One bloom was turned away, its petals partly obscured by another, looking almost like it was hiding. But when I moved, the light shifted. From a new angle, it revealed itself fully: soft, glowing, and quietly radiant. In that moment, it echoed how I felt. I wasn’t hiding-I just hadn’t been seen yet. The composition breaks with tradition. The focal point sits low in the frame, within the blossom’s core. I avoided placing it along conventional thirds because this image isn’t about perfection or clarity, it’s about emotion. Much of the frame is blurred by choice, inviting stillness rather than spectacle. Technically, it’s a two-image focus stack, with each frame captured at slightly different focal planes. This wasn’t about sharpness, but about gently revealing more of the flower’s hidden depth. I disclose this because I believe photographic technique should serve feeling, not the other way around.

In musical language, tutti marks the moment when the entire orchestra enters as one. Not melody, but texture breaks the silence. Here, the flock dissolves into a single organism, notes scattered across the white staff of ice. Identity collapses into density. Where other movements in this series lean toward isolation and order, this frame accepts dissonance. A visual white noise: life compressed into a low, unending hum against the cold.

I had never written about the making of this image, captured in 2013 and later posted to Flickr in 2015, until now. The original photograph was heavily overexposed and initially became a black-and-white interpretation. To my surprise, that version became very popular. With the colors of the original scene still fresh in my memory, I later decided to reconstruct what the photograph itself had failed to preserve. I repainted the greens, restored the warmth of the light, and used the glowing rim around the deer to bring it out of the darkness rather than simply correcting the exposure. At the time, I had no idea this experiment would become such a fan favorite. Looking back, its imperfections may actually be part of what gave the image its character—it became less a record of what the camera captured and more a reconstruction of what I remembered seeing.

Storybook Fairytales - Cherry Lives in Her Fairytales A little girl entering my frame isn’t something you often see in my portfolio—but this was one of those rare, unplanned moments that end up becoming unforgettable. And truthfully, this may be my favorite image of the year so far. Every April, I go out searching for blossoms, magnolias and cherry trees, because the spring bloom remains a reason I continue photographing, even while the world seems to chase landscapes and grand vistas. Flowers are still my anchor. This photo wasn’t staged. I was immersed in the quiet magic of full bloom, focused on the soft cascade of petals, when this girl wandered unexpectedly into the scene. At that exact moment, a gentle “cherry rain” began to fall. At first, I thought someone had shaken the branches above, but no, it was nature’s own timing. A coincidence. A gift. And I pressed the shutter. It was just a second. But it felt like stepping into a storybook.

The original photograph was captured near the end of our long journey driving back to Reykjavík under a heavily overcast sky. Just when the day seemed destined to end beneath the clouds, breaks of sunlight began moving across the mountains, naturally creating the extraordinary patches of light that define this scene. The light itself was already there; post-production was about revealing its full character. I worked across the image in fine detail, enhancing the textures of the mountains, fields, road, clouds, and especially the subtle transitions between sunlight and shadow. Rather than inventing a different moment, the intention was to amplify what had unfolded in front of us—a final gift of light at the end of a very long road.
